1961: Gérard Mulliez opens his first store in Roubaix (Northern France) in the "Hauts Champs" district, from which the company takes its name.
1967: First Auchan hypermarket opens in Roncq (Northern France).
1969: Invention of the first shopping centre in Englos (close to Lille, Northern France).
1976: Creation of Immochan, the group’s real-estate subsidiary.
1977: Employee share ownership scheme launched in France.

1981: Creation of Alcampo in Spain.
1983: Creation of Banque Accord,
the group’s banking subsidiary.
1989: First Auchan hypermarket in Italy.

1996: Acquisition of Docks de France group (France, Spain) and the Spanish and Portuguese activities of Pão de Açúcar: first hypermarkets in Portugal (Jumbo chain) and first supermarkets in France (Atac chain) and Spain (Sabeco chain). Auchan becomes a multi-business group.
1997: Partnership with Groupe Rinascente in Italy.
1996-1999: First Auchan hypermarkets in Luxembourg (1996), Poland (1996), Hungary (1998) and China (1999).
First “Les Halles d'Auchan” discount store in France.
2000: Auchan France creates Auchandrive, a drive-through service.
2001: Alliance with RT Mart in China; acquisition of RT Mart hypermarkets in Taiwan.
First supermarkets in Poland: acquisition of Billa stores, which become part of the Elea chain.
In France, opening of an Internet shopping site, Auchandirect , in the Paris region.
Banque Accord present in Poland and Spain.
2002: First Auchan hypermarkets in Russia.
Opening of the Italian subsidiary of Banque Accord, Accord Italia.
2003: Banque Accord Visa card launched in France, first bank card to be offered by retail sector.
2004: Legal restructuring of the Group into 4 divisions: hypermarkets, supermarkets, Banque Accord and Immochan. In Italy, acquisition of totality of La Rinascente food business from the Ifil group. In France, Chronodrive opens its first site: this concept allows online ordering and collection at a pickup point.
2005: Creation of the Atak supermarket chain in Russia and A-tak in Poland. Opening of BA Finans, the Russian subsidiary of Banque Accord.
2006: Change of generation at the group supervisory board: Vianney Mulliez takes over from Gérard Mulliez. Through a new business area, Auchantelecom, Auchan France becomes a virtual mobile telephone operator. Partnership in Romania: opening of an Auchan hypermarket. Creation of Banque Accord subsidiaries in China and in Romania.
2007: In Portugal, @Jumbo is launched in the great Lisbon. Auchan Italia signs an agreement to operate franchised hypermarkets in the Calabria region.
The Auchan Group and the Ukrainian retail Group Furshet sign a triple partnership agreement.
Agreement with Enka Group in Russia for the operation of 13 hypermarkets.
2008: Opening of the first Auchan hypermarket in Ukraine. Nakheel and Auchan sign agreement for the creation of a joint venture in the Gulf.
2009: Opening of the first Auchan hypermarket in Dubai, in partnership with Dubai World.
The symbol of the robin red-breast, associated with the Auchan brand,
was chosen for its cheerful character and closeness to people.
It is a good reflection of the spirit of the “AUCHAN LIFESTYLE”.
