The hypermarket activity, which represented 80 % of group revenue in 2009, brought together 534 hypermarkets, in 13 countries and region. 
48% of these are located in Western Europe (France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Luxembourg) and 52% in central and Eastern Europe (Poland, Hungary, Russia, Ukraine, Romania), China (mainland China and Taiwan) and Dubai.

5 RT Mart hypermarkets are under management contracts in Taiwan. In France, in association with Groupe Auchan, the Schiever group owns 7 hypermarkets of the Auchan chain. In Italy, Auchan opened its first franchised store in 2007.

ClientsThe hypermarkets develop wide ranges: they carry national brands, regional products, Auchan products and budget products, including the “Pouce” product range, developed by the company.
The strong discounting policy is based on a strengthened offering of low-cost products and the lowering of prices. In five countries (France, Spain, Italy, Poland and Hungary), "self-discount" sections bring together the most economic products in the hypermarket, in particular sold as bulk items.


The selection, the verification and the quality of the products are subject to strict requirements. In particular, food safety remains a constant priority to ensure that customers can trust in our products.

To respond to the need of our customers for authenticity, the chain is working in close cooperation with local SMEs and producers, and proposes regional products or products originating from agricultural lines.
In Italy, for example, the "regional savours" range is made up of recognised and typical products from different Italian regions.

Innovative services


From photo laboratories and beauty parlours to jewellery shops and optician’s, the shop offering has become diversified and has seen the addition of intangible services: travel, insurance, ticket shop, telephony, financial products, Rik & Rok club for children (Portugal, France and Spain)... To reinforce the relation of proximity with the customer, the chains are also developing loyalty cards.

Key dates


1967 Six years after Gérard Mulliez opened the first store, the first Auchan hypermarket was opened in Roncq, in Northern France.
1981 Alcampo is created in Spain.
1989 First Auchan in Italy.
1996-1999 Acceleration of growth: acquisition of the Docks de France group (France, Spain) and the Spanish and Portuguese activities of Pao de Açucar. Partnership with the Rinascente group in Italy, first Auchan hypermarkets in Luxembourg, Poland, Hungary and China.
2001 Alliance with Mart in China. Acqusition of RT Mart hypermarkets in Taiwan.
2002 First Auchan hypermarkets in Russia.
2004 In Italy, acquisition of the totality of La Rinascente food business.
2006 First Auchan hypermarket in Bucharest (Romania), opened in partnership with MGV Distri-Hiper.
2007 Auchan signed a agreement with Az SpA, to operate franchised hypermarkets in the Calabria region. Partnership agreement signed with the Furshet Group in Ukraine. 
Agreement with Enka Group in Russia for the operation of 13 hypermarkets.
2008 Auchan opens it's first hypermarket in Kiev (Ukraine).
Agreement with Dubai World in Dubai to develop the Auchan banner.
2009 Acquisition of 100% of the capital in Romania (6 hypermarkets).
First Auchan opening in Dubai, in partnership with Dubai World.
